Pontoon – The Very British Version of Blackjack

Here at Kaboo we offer a huge variety of table games. Our table games section features many varieties of blackjack games, including pontoon, by NetEnt. Pontoon is the British version of blackjack, and it has much in common with its derivative game.

The Objective

Like blackjack, the goal of pontoon is to reach 21 without going bust. The player plays against the dealer rather than against other players, and the game is considered to be a game based on a true mix of skill and luck. The dealer will give out two cards each on the initial deal, and then the player can decide whether or not to ask for more cards depending on the value of the cards in their hand. Should a player be holding a 10 and a 6 for example, they can decide to take the risk and ask for another card, they will be hoping for a 5 or lower at this point in order to make their 21. The dealer however, must take another card if their hand equals 16 or they have a soft 17. In pontoon, the words “twist” and “stick” replace the words “hit” and “stand.”

Just like in Spanish 21, the player can split their hand if they have a pair of aces, or in this case a pair of any denomination. The player can then play both hands against the dealer. Another option in NetEnt’s version of pontoon is that the player can chose to play up to three hands from the beginning. All a player needs to do is place a bet in all three boxes on the screen in order to indicate that they want to play all three hands.

The 5 Card Trick

If a player or the dealer makes a 21 with an ace and a picture card, this is called a pontoon (or blackjack) and they automatically win the game. Another way to win, which pays out quite well, is to get a 5 card trick. A 5 card trick means that the player has reached the total of 21 with a hand of 5 cards.

The layout of Pontoon is quite similar to other blackjack games. The stack of cards remaining to be dealt lay on the right. Next come the dealers chips. Last are the minimum and maximum payouts. While playing Pontoon online, players are able to keep the same bet for each hand if they so choose. However, players also have the option to adjust their bet before the start of each deal. The screen is easy to see and understand where to adjust bets.
